How do they know if a learning disability existed before and maybe wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood and whether or not it is caused by TBI. The person was hit by a car and suffered unconciousness briefly. Pt. notices difference in academic performance since accident .Thanks

: I guess there is no way to know for sure but I’m always tempted to believe what people are telling me. If the Pt. is telling you they sense a difference in their cognitive abilities now, after an accident, maybe there’s something to it.The brain is as fragile as it is complex. A head trauma that resulted in unconsciousness perhaps might be able to effect some subtle changes in brain functioning. How do they know if a learning disability existed before and maybe

Greetings mn,Listen to the patient. Even minor head injuries to vulnerable parts of the brain can cause functional deficits. Has this patient or his/her family noticed any personality changes also? It’s important for this patient to have a brain SPECT study in order to determine the area(s) of damage so appropriate medication and/or cognitive retraining exercises can be provided. Do not delay.Blessings, momo
