My daughter has every single “symptom” of dyslexia and is ADHD. We homeschool and I am at a loss at how to go about getting her help. My pediatrican says to see the school (that would be me) the insurance says its the “schools” responsiblity to test and the county will test her as long as she is off in one of the many testing areas, which by the way do not test for dyslexia.
I am told she must fall 10 pts between the accademic test and the IQ test to even qualify for the dyslexic test. What am I to do?
Ohio is right
… you are the “school” — but the school system is, too, for this — but, as Ohio said, their strict obligation is for the identification, and there’s a lot of variation as far as getting help after you know there’s a problem.
There are also many private testing and remediation options. Is there a Scottish Rite center in your area?
I know most homeschoolers, consider themselves to be “the school” but in the case of testing a child for disabilities, “the school” is the legal public entity in your district that educates all the kids that dont go to private school or get home schooled.
The public school district, where you live is responsible for identifying children who have disabilities regardless of weather or not they attend public school.
you need to write a letter to the district your child would go to if you didnt homeschool and tell them that you believe your child has disabilities and that you want her tested.
Under child find laws they are required to do the testing.
services are another matter- If your child does have a disability and you home school then your state and district may, or may not provide services for children who are homeschooled. By law it is left up to the individual states and districts, however they can not provide services in a discriminatory mannor, so if your in a district that that say offers speech and tutoring to private and homeschool kids, then if your child needs those services that cant deny them to her. Most districts however offer only limited services to private and homeschooled children.
I have recently heard that some states have passed laws requireing the districts in their juristictions to provide some uniform systems of service delivvery to children who are in private schools or homeschooled, but all I have on this is rumor and and scuttle butt, I have yet to see the actual laws.
