how to pass a test

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 13 year old daughter has trouble passing tests. Her reading and comprehension skills are weak. She reads and reviews the information for the test. I ask her questions. She teaches me about the subject. We make practice tests. Her teachers have read test to her and this some times helps. Does any one know any thing we can do to help.

Are all her tests memorization-based? You could consider asking for alternative kinds of tests. It sounds as if she would do better with hands-on projects than with memorization-based tests.

In the absence of that, it sounds as if you’re doing the right things. You might also consider reading the textbook to her and asking the teacher for a study guide. It sounds as if she has trouble reading the actual test itself when given to her.

The only “cure” for that is to have the teachers read the test to her. Possibly consider getting her an IEP or rewriting her IEP to have this included.

Hi tc, I use visualizing and verbalizing for reviewing for tests. They have a chapter on note taking and outlining. I also use visulizing vocabulary for understanding vocabulary and concepts. The students draw the definition, not the vocabulary word, but the definition. This is particularly a good strategy for those with strong visual spatial abilities. I have had some students go from c’s and d’s to A’s and B’s using these techniques. I strongly recommend these two programs. I teach these in any class that I teach.
