I need some good visual learning materials

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is 9 and he is dyslexic and has a significant auditory processing disorder. He really struggles with the comprehension of social studies this point, it is very bookie. Can anyone suggest some good visual materials for learning social studies or have any suggestions? I am looking for all the help I can get. Thanks!! Liz

I would help him draw pictures of the vocabulary words and then use maps and time lines to help him understand and visualize the concepts. Also doing lots of discussion or verbalization helps him create the pictures in his mind of what he is reading so he can comprehend it.

I use Inspiration extensively to help my students make connections with science and social studies vocab…..and your son is just old enough that he may be able to use it himself, given some support. I’ve found that the library of pictures in Inspiration is limited, but it’s very easy to copy and paste appropriate pictures from the internet. You can find Inspiration at:

As a special ed teacher, I find color to be one of the most helpful visual discriminators. Make a photocopy of text pages and let him color code important information in highlighter. Use the same color highlighter for related material. For maps and charts break out the colored pencils. Draw borders, rivers, etc in color. Again keep related infomation in the same color. Let your child add helpful notes to himself in colored pencil. When you photocopy maps and charts it is usually helpful to also enlarge it. Good Luck
