IDA convention in Philadelphia- Nov. 3-6

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

 Hi everyone, I know that I have been absent for a long time from this board but I have been soooo busy! It seemed like I was on so many boards, that I wasn’t getting any work finished. I have five students that I tutor after school (trying to pay off my charges) and I am working with three new team teachers this year. Not only are they new, but they have never teamed before. It has been quite a challenge!

My two reading classes are going to be more than a challenge this year. I have 18 9th grade boys that are reading at a 2-3 grade level, all have behavior issues, learned helpless, most grduated from ESL into LD (when are they going to learn that memorizing words just isn’t going to work?) and they have me. I have joined a teachers research group and the head of research for the county is going to help me actually do a research study of the group. I am pulling out every program that I have to remediate them in reading, comprehension, fluidity, vocabulary, and writing. I am even going to work with some eye exercises because some have vision problems, need to go for vision therapy but their parents are just surviving. Most of their parents don’t speak English so it is hard to communicate with them. This is leading up to my main question, who is going to the IDA convention in Philadelphia the first week in Nov.?

I would like to room with anyone going to the convention because it would really cut costs. I don’t smoke, am mostly agreeable, (as long as you don’t bring up whole language), and don’t take much time in the bathroom. I eat anything, too much, so we could go to some great restaurants, but I have been told that I sometimes snore (Robert keeps telling me, but I need proof!). I can be contacted through email at [email protected]. Have a nice fall and I will report back as to how my classes are doing. By the way, when I finish with my study, I am going to report it to the administration of my county. Shay
