The most important thing with Ld students is Baby steps. When they are having the big picture put in their face they get completely overwhelmed. First find out what he knows ( topic sentence, supporting details, conclusion, indentions etc) Second evaluate where to go from there. If he needs to learn Main Idea start there and build with one supporting detail then two etc. There are also some great articles under writing on this web site. A great web site is www.linguisystems.com Good luck.

I teach 3-5 grade resource (LD, MIID, Behavioral) students. The way I teach writing is by doing several examples on the board then slowly making the students do the last step then they have had to the last two step, ect. I start with a web. Topic I choose in the middle of the web then I get them three points about the topic. Together then they tell me 3 things about the 3 points. From there we write one sentence for each point starting with the main topic and then going to my point one and then their 3 things. Then we do my point 2 where we might write 2 sentence together and then they write 2 sentences on their own. Then we move to point 3. We always work fromt he chalkboard and they copy down what we have written. I never tell them how long or make comments about their sentences as long as they relate to the topic and are complete sentences. My students have been able to score OK on our state writing test in the 5th grade. hope this makes sense and helps.
