Hi! I am in the process of trying to organize a realistic communication system for a small school district special education department. I need some ideas that have been working to help keep the lines of communication open between the LD resource room and regular division teacher.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
Deb
Re: Inclusion Communication
I am a high school sped teacher-communication is always a tough one to keep going between everyone’s busy day. I put together a memo to give to all the teachers of the students I case manage, on a bi-weekly basis. It includes “participation in class, completion of work, behavior, homework” with catagories of “excellent, good, fair, and poor.” At the bottom I ask for any work outstanding, and then a space for comments. This system has expanded to all the sped teachers. We have been doing it for the past two years and we now get the support of the administration-it is seen as part of everyone’s responsibility to communicate the information. This year we have set up a file system with the entire identified student population where each student has a folder with the most current “progress sheet” located there. This has assisted the Learning Center to maintain a handle on what each student has completed and what they need to complete. Both general ed and special ed staff are aware of where each student is at the present time.
WHen I had people in resource classes, I had a short form that I slipped into the regular ed. teachers’ mailboxes every week or every other week. I talked to the teachers about what to put on it — things like “does homework most of the time” or not… participates in class… passed or failed quizzes… and upcoming projects.
About 1 in 3 teachers were pretty good at getting them back to me.
