Instructional Strategies

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone help me with useful Instructional Strategies and HOW to use them as an In Class Support Instructor. I am new to Teaching and am in dire need of some useful and workable Instructional Strategies that will help my students as well as the Regular Ed. Student.

Sincerely,

Jerry G.

Jerry, I am currently working on professional development for teachers that will teach teachers how to differentiate curriculum for All learners. Differentiation has always usually been associated with GATE students but over the years, research has shown that these same strategies - identifying the learning styles, strengths, and difficulties - has been equally successful for all learners. Differentiation training also shows teachers how to modify the process (strategies) content, and materials to meet the needs of all learners. If you go to the ASCD website, they have great books, training tapes, and resources to help you adjust your curriculum, teaching strategies, and materials to help all students learn. These resources also help with modifiying assessments to help you determine if students are actually learning what you are teaching (formative assessment). Corwin Press publishes these books and I have found them to be extremely useful. Look for books written by Carol Ann Tomlenson.

Hope this is some assistance to you.

Go to LD In Depth and click on “For teachers” or “inclusion” — both have excellent resources and ideas. However, it can be a very tough challenge to meet student needs in inclusive settings. For some students, the setting isn’t really appropriate; it’s also a lot harder to manage if you don’t have time to plan or the cooperation of teachers and admins. Spring break can be a good time to make plans to make the most out of the rest of the year :)

It would still be helpful to know what subjects and what this is for. Off the top of my head, the best book out there with lots of instructional strategies is Dr. Mel Levine’s Educational Care. On March 27, he has a special on PBS televison that might also be worth watching and you can visit his website at www.misunderstoodminds. com or something close to that.
