Is it too late?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a few questions regarding the education of my LD child. I am interested in home schooling him, but I’m wondering if I’ve waited too late. School will begin the day after labor day. I have a california teaching credential. Next, I’d like to know if anyone knows of any on-line resoruces for teaching reading and math.

So what if it is Labor Day. My best friend is starting homeschool tomorrow. PS started three weeks ago!! When you homeschool your school schedule is up to you. Many homeschool all year long and take breaks here and there.

I don’t live in CA. I did about 9 years ago. Is your child already registered with the PS? If so then write a letter telling the superintendent that you will not be bringing your child to PS anymore, and that your child will be enrolled in a homeschool program/private program, or whatever needs to be told if this much. I would contact the local state California Homeschool group for further information on how to go about doing this. I don’t know your laws, so you need to find out legally what needs to be done.

I have a friend who is a special education teacher at a local school. She told me that my ld child would not have gotten the superb therapy in the ps . My friend teaches the hardest students and she gets discouraged that there is not more funding for better programs (like Fast ForWord and Interactive Metronome) and more teachers to work one on one with these students.

You on the other hand in homeschooling can use what ever program or method that you deem best for your child. You may be able to afford very expensive programs or you may have to spend less money on cheaper but still good programs. However I think the trick here is that you will be spending one on one time with your dc. I personally believe that is where learning best takes place.

I hope this has helped you.
Blessings,
Jan P.

http://www.hsc.org/news.html is a good website for level-headed info about CA laws — there’s a current fru-fru happening but these guys seem to know what’s worth frothing about and what isn’t. There’s a section on “getting legal.”

I’d also visit this “how to start homescholing” page:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/8259/how.html

It touches on some of the “hot buttons” of homeschooling (without setting anything on fire). There are different “camps” out there and it’s good to know ahead of time topics folks feel strongly about. Funny thing, folks who are strong-willed enough to pull their kids from traditional schools tend to have strong opinions :) Whatever you do, don’t assume “all” homeschoolers feel any one way!

Check out Read America, the home of Phono-Graphix. There is a bulletin board for home schoolers.
