How do I challenge the students identified with learning disabilities while still challenging the students identified as general educations sudents in the class?
Re: Keeping all students interested
Thank you for your reply and your information! What you said makes so much sense. I will keep this in mind as I plan for lessons. Thanks again!!
School can be a challenging process for children with learning differences in and of itself. I teach my own mixed classes by remembering that all my children learn and can learn well. What some of them cannot do is read well or write well or take tests well. So as I teach I do not require note taking and I do not give memorization-based untimed tests. Instead I often give alternative assessments that offer students a choice as to how they would like to demonstrate their mastery of the material. Some offer me a drawing in response to that, others put on a play, still others write a poem or some just have a long discussion with me about the concepts we’ve learned.
Flexibility and ‘thinking outside the box’ will challenge all your students, ld or not, while yet not unfairly asking any of them to do the things they cannot do.
