Ken C, multisyllables

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

The Great Leaps site says “to being able to sound out cvc, cvcc, and cvce patterns.” What is done for multi-syllables words? Are students taught how to syllabicate longer words: CVVC, C/VC, CV/C, CVVVC etc.?

Given the remedial nature of Great Leaps, a multi-syllabic intervention was not chosen. As is, we found it takes over a year to get the progress and scores we wanted. Great Leaps was designed to be supplemental, though often it has had to stand alone. I know the “hard-core corps” of phonics lovers won’t appreciate this, but only a modicul of phonics is necessary for fast remedial work.

We are looking to add a more in-depth addendum soon for those desiring a more comprhensive intervention. Hoping this makes sense - I’m on signficant pain meds for neck problems - could be related to my concussion this summer (hope not), Ken Campbell
