kinesiology/gym brain

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am creating a webquest for a class I am taking. My partner and I chose to research using gym brain with ld kids. we have found significant material related to gym brain and their company. we are searching for research and development of kinesiology used educationally with ld students other than gym brain. we are not doing well at finding much. if you know of a source, internet, periodical, book, please reply to post or send email. Thanks!

Don’t you mean Brain Gym? My daughter had one session. We weren’t impressed. She even aske me on the way home, “Mom, do you think Dr. ________________ was trying to trick our minds?” (This was an 8 year old)

You won’t likely find what you are looking for. There is little to no scholarly research on “programs” such as you have chosen. These programs are “researched” by their authors. The academic community has years ago pretty well “pooh-poohed” programs that seek to treat LDs via sensori-motor, activity-oriented approaches.

Depending upon the requirements of your class, you might need to choose something else. If you must use research from peer-reviewed journals, I would peruse the peer-reviewed journals to see what is out there.

I don’t know much about brain gym in particular but I will tell you that I became convinced of the need to take a sensory/motor approach through reading all the research on brain plasticity done by neuroscientists. Many lament the giant gulf between the work of these neuroscientists and education.

Animal studies have proven that you can change neural pathways by providing an enriched environment. This has been shown in animal studies (animal studies are the gold standard in neuroscience because you can study the brain directly post mortem)

The enriched environment provided involves sensory/motor stimulation in attempts to improve specific areas of the brain.

Eventually the gulf between neuroscience and education will be crossed but as a parent I don’t have time to wait.

Search under neuroscience and brain plasticity.
