Language Arts for HOH son

Hi all,

I have been focusing so much on phonics with my 8 1/2y son who is hard of hearing. He does wear 2 hearing aids. But I just realized today, that I need to get something for him that would be good for language arts.

I am using Reading Reflex with him. In the fall, we will be going into the advanced code. I plan on playing word type games over the summer, so that he will stay fresh with the sounds.

He should be going into 4th grade this fall, but I know that he will be unable to do Language Arts at this level. What would be a good, solid program that would work with his disabilities?

Have you spoken to a speech and language specialist about this? I’d think they’d be the people to make the best recommendation. Seems like he’d need a program that approaches language from that perspective. Of course, LIPS comes to mind. It’s more detailed and intensive than Reading Reflex but otherwise a similar philosophy. LIPS’ approach is really from an SLP viewpoint.

My 6 year old niece has poor hearing. She’s been in an early intervention program for a couple years and the SLP has been an enormous help.

Hi, Lori,

I think I’ve talked with you before. I teach hearing impaired children. If your child has difficulty formulating even simple sentences, then I’d recommend “Apple Tree” which is a written language program. It is very basic in that it teaches in detail all kinds of sentences.Here is a link for Apple Tree and some other products for HI children. Warning, Reading Milestones is a sight based reading program and I do not recommend it. Reading Reflex is what you need to try.

If your child is not terribly language delayed, then you might try using some of the Steck-Vaughn resources. They ahve many good low reading level materials:

Lori,

I would agree with Joan that if Reading Reflex is not successful, you certainly should try Lindamood Bell. It is just more costly to be trained and the material are much more expensive. That’s why I’d normally recommend Reading Reflex first.
