At Last reading program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone used the At Last reading program from Mary Pecci? It has been compared to Reading Reflex and said to work better with children with reading problems.
Thanks, Kathye

I have seen a few posts from homeschooling parents at vegsource that At Last worked for them when Reading Reflex did not.

I am a ***huge*** fan of Reading Reflex because it worked so well for us. I had earlier looked at and discarded At Last without even trying it because the book did not appeal to me, and I could tell the approach would not appeal to dd either. Reading Reflex made a lot of sense to me when I read it, it was easy for us to do, we both liked it, and dd made big gains with it almost immediately (within the first 3 hours of one-on-one).

It may come down to a matter of personal taste. If you’re unsure, you should get copies of both books from the library (through inter-library loan, if necessary) and compare them. Or, buy both books from your local bookstore and return the one that doesn’t appeal.

At Last appeared to me to be a traditional phonics approach to reading — apparently quite a good one, from comments I had read that led me to buy the book. Reading Reflex, in contrast, takes a really new look at reading. To me, Reading Reflex is the simplest, most straight-forward and efficient way of teaching reading to children, and I much prefer it to other methods I have encountered.
