literacy testing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a teacher from Ontario who is trying to prepare students for the standardized reading and writing tests that will be happening in October of 2002. I am working with students who have learning disabilities, but they still have to write the test. Does anyone have any ideas of activities, lesson plans, resources for teaching these students how to write a test (ie. what do terms in questions mean) and how to prepare themselves. Thanks! kate

I try to prepare my students for the standardized tests they take as well but the best approach I’ve found is to take an old copy of the test or a very similar test and go through it with them. We look at the different kinds of questions and answer them. If nothing else, it helps to reduce the stress a bit that they have when they take these tests.

Books to prepare students for standardized tests are also available at teachers’ supply stores. I have one called “Preparing Students for Standardized Tests.” It has all the different kinds of questions that appear on standardized tests.
