My 9 1/2 year old daughter has NLD and a pretty severe speech and language disability as well.
Presently, outside of school, she is receiving Psychology counseling twice a month, brain gym (a form of OT) and speech and language therapy.
Her school put together a very impressive IEP for her, but are a little slow with implementing it into her curriculum. She is struggling big time in the fourth grade, and I’m considering pulling her out of public school and would like to put her in a private school that has professionals on-staff who know more about this horrible, wreched disability and can/want to help her!
In addition to her accademic struggles, she also has a difficult time socially.
Any suggestions? I will drive her ANY WHERE in the state of Massachusetts for a good school. I will do anything to ensure that this sweet little girl “thrives” educationally.
I would also appreciate any suggestions/links for parent support groups. I’m overwhelmed, and it’s hard for a lot of people to understand just how difficult it is to cope and help her.

Re: Looking for good schools for NLD elementary students
I don’t know if this school will be right for your daughter’s needs, but I’ve heard the Landmark School is a very supportive place. They may be more geared towards dyslexic children, but it’s worth a call to check. A relative of mine attended and seemed pleased with the experience; I know he has some social issues, and he is also very bright. (He’s a relative through marriage and I don’t know all the details; his mother once told me he had “several challenges” but didn’t elaborate.)
Good luck—your determination will make a world of difference for your child.
Re: Looking for good schools for NLD elementary students
Is moving to another state an option? If it is, I know of a special school located in California that is geared toward NLD children. It’s called the Orion Academy, and here is its Web site:

Unfortunately, I don’t know of any specialized NLD schools in Massachusetts. Wish I did!

Re: Looking for good schools for NLD elementary students
Actually, I forgot about this one; it’s in Connecticut, but at least it was started for students with NLD!!
Here’s a link: http://www.fa-ct.org/mission.html
There are some good web resources for support (nldontheweb.??? org? com? I forget :)) - don’t know schools in your area, though Peterson’s has guides to them. Only way to know if it will be a good fit owuld be to visit - it sounds like you’re looking for a place with a lot of therapeutic help. Sometimes the right school will not always specialize in, say, NLD but still be the right school for the person with NLD.
Just curious, are you Connie? or Linda? (Or Tini? or Zukie?) Neat name :-)
