Looking for a phonics program for kindergarten

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have used Sing,Spell, Read, & Write for 15 yrs. in a private kindergarten, and have added to it with art activities, etc. The edition we have used all these years is no longer available. I am waiting to view samples of the new edition. Are there any other good programs for kindergarten that some of the classroom teachers on this site have used? S,S,R,& W Stories are pretty pure phonetically, focusing on short-vowel words with a few sight words to help with the readibility of the stories. Some phonic programs I have already looked at are more sight-word stories with some phonics added in.

I’m not a teacher, but my daughter has a language problem and I feared that she would not learn to read along with the other kids in her kinder class, but she did really well using zoo-phonics. The teacher uses it every year and the kids that come from her class do much better in spelling than those that come from another class which does not use zoo-phonics. I should add that this teacher taught my daughter kinder and 1st grade, but is mostly a 1st grade teacher. She swears by zoo-phonics and so do I after seeing how well it works for all the kids (not just my dd). And I should add that they all love it!

By the way, my dd is decoding at near grade level (3rd grade) and I swear zoo-phonics got her off to a great start. I took over when she got to 2nd grade using a different phonics program, so she has not actually used zoo-phonics for the last 2 school years, but she still remembers all the animal names and the sounds that they make.
