math for 3/5graders on 1st gr. level

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am looking for a math program that will be good for older elementary students with low math skills, around first grade. Does anyone have any programs they are currently using and liking with similar students? I am looking for something that features lots of hands on activities that the kids would enjoy and not find too “babyish”. Thanks for your help!

I would recommend the touch math kits and methods. They are visual and they can be used to accomodate older children. Look on their website www.touchmath.com

You might want to look at Math-U-See (http://www.mathusee.com). I believe the math teacher who developed this program did so in order to teach math to his Downs child.

Whatever programs or whatever you use, you are going to have to teach those foundation skills. That’s almost always how those kids got so far behind; the Grade 3 and 4 teacher didn’t want to give them the “baby” stuff, so the kids wasted the whole year lost in the swamp once more.
My experience is that most kids are very happy to finally learn how to succeed. I tell them that we are going to go back and review from the beginning, and work back up to grade level. As long as they understand that they are not being puit back in kindergarten and you don’t expect them to be stuck there forever, they will most often work through things. I encourage them to work quickly through the things they can do and to take pride in speed and mastery. This builds a good foundation for the newer work.
