Math-U-See

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone had any success with this program? My son is struggling with math and I was wondering if this would be helpful. My son is dyslexic and in third grade and he is finding math particularly hard this year, I would appreciate any information. Thanks Liz

We have MUS and have used it. It’s a good program in that it works from the concrete to the abstract, which is a solid foundation for developing math concepts. It is a little weak on computation and word problems.

Recently we discovered Singapore Math, which is another excellent math program. We are in the process of switching over to SM, using MUS as a backup if needed for concept development. SM covers a lot more ground in a year than MUS. It also works from the concrete to the abstract, but is less expensive because you make your own manipulatives. The workbook format is very pleasing, there are lots of problems to work in a variety of presentations, it is very incremental, and they are really good with word problems.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, take a look at the SM website (http://www.singaporemath.com). You can look at some sample pages there.

You really can’t go wrong with either program. I think MUS is more appropriate for severely disabled children.

A lot of math programs are discussed on the homeschooling boards at http://www.vegsource.com If you do a search on MUS, you’ll turn up a lot of posts detailing both the strengths and weaknesses of the approach.

I’m a real fan of Math U See. I’m using it with my 8 year old son. We started with Foundations and are now on the Intermediate Level.

I would suggest that you speak to someone at Math U See to make sure you’re starting at the right level. The key in Math is understanding the concept of place value. This program does a great job.

I’ve also heard that Making Math Meaningful is a great program, but haven’t seen it myself. I’ve also heard good things about Moving With Math.

Good luck.

Darlene
