Hi. I’m 20 years old, and I have always struggled with math. I don’t know why, but I’ve always had problem with simple concepts and sometimes I mix up my numbers…and it’s not like I rush through math because I know how I am with numbers. Once a teacher told my mom that it is like I have mathmatical dyslexia, but it had neer really been looked into. Someone said something the other day about this disorder, so I got curious. Can anyone tell me how I can find out if I have this, warning signs, etc… I am tired of feeling dumb when it comes to math. Thanks.
Welp, you have a LOT of company in feeling bad about your math skills - it’s unfortunately a near-epidemic. Google “innumeracy” and you’ll see what I mean.
One of the best articles about math and LD is http://www.ldonline.org/article.php?max=20&id=974&loc=70 - Kate Garnett’s “math and learning disabilities” article.
LD In Depth has a whole section on Math including “What we know and don’t know about math disabilities” at http://www.ldonline.org/article.php?max=20&id=538&loc=70 There are other articles about dyslexia and math.
If you search for “dyscalculia” you’ll find a few sites on it as well.
And if you come ‘round to Parkland College, I oculd do what I spend most of my day doing… help you figure out the numbers :-)
