medications for ADHD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi,

I have a student that is on meds for ADHD and anxiety - he has terrible reactions to the drug combinations and the parent asked me if I knew of other meds. Do you know of some that work well?

His parents should be talking to his psychiatrist or whoever is his treating physician.

Some kids never respond well to ADHD meds and alternatives need to be found. Behavior modification, neurofeedback, or other non-medication treatments can be helpful.

Also, as a teacher, it is an extremely bad idea for you to get involved with the medications other that to report issues at school. Please encourage them to seek the proper professional helpl.

I agree with scifinut. There are a number of meds out there for ADHD, and what works well for one kid won’t necessarily work for another. It gets more complicated when you add other meds to the mix. The parent needs to talk to their pediatrician or whoever prescribed the current meds. If the reactions are that bad, they shouldn’t wait for an appointment but call their doctor.

Thanks for the input - the family is in contact with Doctors treating my student, but they had asked for my opinion too.

It sounds like they are doing what they need to, however, make sure to let them know you are not a doctor and can’t give out medication information. If they need a second opinion they should seek another doctor.
