midline perception problems

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am working with a young man who is showing difficulty with midline perception. i.e. he sees a rectangle that is divided into 4 by horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines as two separate rectangles. He sees horizontal and vertical lines that extend beyond the rectangle as fragmented according to the number of “sections” inside and out and even when it is pointed out to him, he does not perceive them as one whole line. With work, I got him to see the diagonal lines as 1 continuous line instead of 2 segments.

I am thinking this is very related to his inability to see the whole picture when reading literature: ie. he does not see the protagonist in relation to the other characters, changes in the protagonist or setting, etc.

Can anyone please point me in the direction of materials that discuss this and/or offer advice? (Something readable please: what I have found so far is so full of medical/scientific jargon I can’t make heads or tails of it ) :?
