My daughter has no clue about money - For example, no matter how many times we talk about 4 quarters being the same as a dollar, she just doesn’t get it or remember it - and yes, she gets an allowance. It doesn’t matter - she just wants to spend it all at once & if she doesn’t, she manages to lose the money after that! Any ideas about how to teach money skills - I’m especially interested in any fun ideas outside of school. Claire is 8 1/2 years old.
thanks!

money questions before ideas
Deb, does your daughter recognize and know the value of the coins? Can she count other combinations (dimes/pennies, etc.)? I have some chants and games I would gladly share if you give a better idea of skills she already has.

Re: money
You’ve gotten some good suggestions- I had to laugh at “paying” to use the bathroom— I can see her telling someone at school that mom makes her pay to “go”!
How about using play money to purchase meals, the privilege of using the television for an hour, hmmm…. the bathroom?
It sounds like some serious structured instruction is in order, though — but it can be fun, too. I’d start with some place value games with just dimes and dollars and pennies (as simple as both of you starting with a “dollar” and rolling the dice, and that’s what you have to pay, and seeing who keeps their money the longest).
