My son is ADHD with Learning Disabilities

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

I realize this is most ly for teachers but really hope I can get some help here. My son is an LD student and has been since 3rd grade. He is now a 7th grader. This is the first year that the staff at his school is dropping the ball with the tutor I guess is what I want to say. This is the LD teachers first year and she does not communicate with Anthony’s teachers as to what he is struggling with, or really doesn’t understand so she will know what to work with on him. One of the reg. ed. teachers told me he has no idea what she does over there, that is her territory and this is mine. This is one of the classes he is struggling with.

Can a child with an IEP have an F if he is in class and really trying? I am even paying a tutor after school to help him. He does have a couple of good teachers, however, there are two (Math and Literature) that just do not cooperate. It seems as though no one knows what the other is doing. Whoose job is it to see what he needs help with? Reg. education teachers or the LD teacher? I have had numerous conferences with this staff and the principal and am getting nowhere. I have another conf. with them all at once that I requested next Tues

I can relate to what you are saying because I literally have to stay on top of my daughter’s LD teacher to make sure that she is getting her accomodations in her classes, she too is in 7th grade. I also tutor her and other kids with LD’s in middle school. It is hard for the LD teacher to make sure that the kids are are getting what they are supposed to get and to keep on top of everything. It is the LD teachers job to keep an open communication between the kids on her caseload and the teachers.

What may be happening is that the school doesn’t have a signed release from you allowing them to talk to your tutor. Believe it or not the school requires that of parents if their is a tutor involved. If I am at school as a volunteer reading tests to the RSP kids, even though I am a district employee at the high school the parents have to sign a form or address a letter that it is ok with them to have me there to assist their child by reading a test to them. Perhaps you can have a contract with your son, the Ld teacher, you, the tutor and his regular ed teachers to make sure that he stays on top of everything.
