After parent conferences, I realized a parent of one of my LD 2nd graders does not understand that he is trying his best even if the work is not perfect. Does anyone have a suggestion of a book I could get for the parent to read? I need HELP!
Re: Need book for parent
I’d like to suggest a great Richard Lavoie video called “How Difficult Can this Be?”. You can find it in the LD Store part of this web site. I’ve watched it myself and it is very enlightening.

How Difficult Can This Be? video
Hi Sherri,
I second Andrea’s recommendation to view the “How Difficult Can This Be?” video. It uses a classroom full of educators, counselors, parents and students and takes them through a variety of activites which shows them firsthand how difficult learning can be for many LD students. Check your school resource center or your local library for a copy. It takes a busy parent only about 70mn to view vs. reading a book.

Learning Disabilities: A to Z
The Richard Lavoie videos (all 3) are excellent, but if you are looking for a book, I found “Learning Disabilities: A to Z, A Parent’s Complete Guide ot Learning Disabilites from Preschool to Adulthood” by Corinne Smith, PHD and Lisa Strick, published by Simon & Schuster ($15 US) was excellent.
I found a wonderful book written by a parent of an LD child. It is called “Help Me to Help My Child: A Sourcebook for Parents of Learning Disabled Children.” I could really identify with the “stages of grief” she talks about and then, once you come out the other side of acceptance, it is time to search all of the avenues available to help your child. But it has a lot of layman’s definitions and explanations that are not too technical. I highly recommend it. The author is Jill Bloom, and it is available in paperback. Hope this helps. Kathy
