I saw earlier today Pres. Bush’s brother talking about how he had dyslexia and how his son was misdiagnosed adhd. He repeated the rhetoric that adhd is way overdiagnosed and that meds are just so kids will be compliant for parents and teachers. This just happens to be a sensitive spot for me since my children don’t need meds to comply with authority figures or make life easier for anyone else. In a way it bothers me some because it seems another famous name naysaying adhd and the meds that go along with it.
I did agree though that for the most part adhd goes away when the kids are engaged and learning from a good teacher. Not all teachers are able to make all subjects totally fun to learn unfortunately. Some subjects are boring to some folks and some teachers are boring to some folks.
I also agree with his opinion that teaching 21st century kids needs to incorporate 21st century technology in order to engage kids. Our kids live in a fast paced world and some parts of school just don’t keep up. My 8th grade son’s soc.studies teacher was showing us some of the things she was using to teach her kids but she certainly didn’t come across as being comfortable using them. She is probably at least 70 yrs old. Her comments regarding email were less than comforting.
Anyway, just wanted to share what I saw and my opinions of it. I would be interested to know what you all think.
Best wishes all.
