New to High School SLD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am getting ready to graduate and will be teaching self-contained SLD. Can I get some “teaching tips” from some veteran teachers? I would greatly appreciate it.

You might want to get some of the following books by Janet Allen, It’s never too late and the other one is Words, Words, Words. Laura Robb also has some great ideas in her books as well. One for middle schoolers is Teaching Middle School Students to read.

I really like Janet Allens books because they are filled with her successes and failures of teaching english to high schoolers who were jaded and failing. She has lots of ideas in her books to facilitate learning and I found them most inspiring.

Will you be teaching language delayed or learning disabled, I am not sure what the SLD stands for? I worked in a Special Day class with high school students earlier this year. It was challenging but fun. You will find a whole gamut of students from those who can’t read, to those who don’t care, those that want to learn and are motivated etc… Try to find a mentor teacher where you will be working at who has a good program set up. The mentor teacher that I worked with was open to change and we shared and implemented new ideas all the time.

You can e-mail me if you would like to share ideas etc..
