Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

I am a first year teacher who is starting a new special education program at an emelemtary school. the program is muli-catigorical, though right now it is mainly comprised of LD students. The programs is many inclusive with some pull-out. The majority of my students are in 2nd and 4th grade right now but I could have grades K-5. I was looking for some imput on the kind of materials and resources that other teachers might suggest for use in my program. Any ideas will be welcome.

Thank you,
Becky

Most of the people here agree strongly that what is needed is remediation and upgrading, not just modifications.
In other words, as much as you possibly can you need to teach reading skills first, writing skills (please!) and then math skills, so your students can work up to being independent in their classes. This often requires pull-out, and as you say you already have some, good, you can use the time most effectively by really teaching skills. It is best to avoid the trap of helping with homework — it never ends because the students never learn to do homework independently and there is always more.
Many programs for teaching reading skills have been mentioned here; you can go through old posts in the Teaching Reading page for all kinds of discussion of various programs and the pros and cons. Many many posts! Same for math.
No doubt many people will also post their favourites here.
