New Teacher with ADD teaching Interrelated Special Education

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hey!
I’m a new teacher and will be teaching interrelated special ed this year. I have a few concerns with teaching because I have ADD myself and want to know if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts about this. I’m confident I have the skills to teach effectively, but I worry that I won’t be able to keep organized or that I will have problems with drifting or losing focus… Please help!

Starting out is always hard, but each year you learn new things and it gets easier as it goes on. Spend some time figuring out an organizing system - maybe some teachers at your school will share ideas. I don’t know what grade level you’ll be teaching, but I got colorful plastic baskets for top of the bookcase and I label them according to class (middle school) or you could do subject and then when I was rushed I could just place the stack of papers etc in the appropriate basket where I could find it. If a student needed to turn in a paper I could just direct them to the right basket. I also had my students keep a notebook right there in the classroom where they would put returned papers for the quarter. I used a computer grade program and I could print out their record. If I missed something they could show me the paper from their notebook and I could correct their grade. Try to establish a routine that gives you time for paperwork and lets the kids know what is expected. For example, you might start the class with a sentence on the board for them to copy correcting punctuation etc. While they are writing you are taking roll, etc. Hope these ideas help. You’ll be fine.

I have ADD too, and I teach elementary resource. My main advice is just to be very organized. Figure out what works for you. I always have my things to do list visible on my desk. I have a folder with all my record keeping in it right on my desk. I make charts for homework turned in, etc. Have a folder for each kid and keep their current IEP and all testing forms in it. Also, grade as you go. Hopefully you will have an online gradebook, like easygrade pro. Don’t let it stack up! What grades will you be teaching? Let me know specifically what types of things you are not sure how to organize and I would be glad to give u more tips (:
