Please help! I am extremely overwhelmed! I inherited a LD classroom with no resources. I desperately need ideas. I teach inclusion and lab K-2nd. I have 27 students. School started 8-14 and the regular ed teachers are expecting me to take their kids Monday! I need ideas for reading, math, social/personal and adaptive skills at all levels! I also desperately need help in getting organized! Any forms you have that work well for you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
Bless your heart. They are expecting you to do the impossible. How can you be ready Monday with no materials!
Anyway, here are a few essential things to get you started:
1) “Reading Reflex” by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness to teach reading decoding skills. All the kids probably need this, but there are pre-tests in the book (amazon.com about $12)
2) for math, buy the manual by Lindamood Bell www.lblp.com called “On Cloud Nine Math”. This will teach you how to teach math to LD students in a multi-sensory way. You’ll need unifix cubes, which hopefully they may already have at school. They are currently working on workbooks to go with this program, but until they are available, just try using the special techniques with the regular ed. math materials.
In the event they let you order a math program, try Math-U-See (Foundations level). That should cover your level of kids. Videos show you how to teach it. http://www.mathusee.com/
You can only do so much at one time. Focus on getting your reading and math and then worry about the other things. Good luck!
