Not Dumb!!!!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I don’t know why it’s so hard for some people to understand that having an LD does not mean being dumb. I’ve had many teachers in the past who have believed that I was dumb because I had an LD or that I couldn’t have an LD because I was too smart. Being in college is nice because the teachers actually have more of a clue about LD students. I also have very good LD support. It’s often even more difficult to convince my peers that having an LD doesn’t mean being stupid, but for the most part they understand. I hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Dan…you are right! My 21 year old son is gifted…extremely gifted. He got a full-scholarship to college, is a math wiz, and will graduate next year with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has done exceptionally well in college, being on the Deans List his entire college career. Yet, he has a learning disability in written expression and he is ADHD. Using the computer and having someone proofread his work, in addition to being able to dictate directly to someone who will type his report for him, have been very successful. People with LD have to learn different ways of doing things; different ways of looking at things. Rather than being dumb, many LD’s are very intelligent and more creative because they have to figure out how do perform in ways that are not the norm. Hang in there, Dan. People who think you are dumb just because you have a learning disability are ignorant of the facts. Makes you wonder who is really dumb? Good luck to you!

Your absolutely right, I have LD but I am just as smart if not more than my regular classmates, I may be slow with catching things but I find that I can be funny and that I attract alot of attention from girls but that might more to do with looks than with my mind, I am a philosophical person and can read but I find Math extremly difficult, I learned along time ago that all Ld people include me are no different than people with the ability to do math and Science, and that I am fun and outgoing and that people like that about me. I surprised alot of people in my class when they found out I was LD because I get good marks on oral presentations and bring in my homework and am always answering questions, many of them did not know that I was getting special help from my teacher and that the reason I sat in the back of the class with my friend was so that he could help me with my grammar for my English papers and my interest for my financial math class. I struggle hard in school but I always find that I am just as smart as everyone else and I find that I enjoy school because I have friends who support me, not everyone knows I have LD but those who do understand and another funny is that when I am up on stage and singing
its like my home and I feel more safe up their than anywhere else in the world, when i am up their I truly understand that God gave me a talent and that I am as smart and intelligent as everyone else.
