OG tutoring - what can I expect?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 13 yr old son will begin OG tutoring next month - 2 x per week, 1-1 1/2 hrs each.. He’s dyslexic, CAPD, ADD - inattentive type, reads @ 4.5 grade level. I’m wondering how much I can expect from the OG program, and how long until I see some results - or more importantly, he sees some results.

His sped teacher is getting trained in OG this May, so next school year he will receive this program in school - Yeah!

What’s your experience been?

I am an OG tutor- so my experience will be a little different. Hope that is okay?

Depending on what he knows- you can expect that a good tutor will spend some time on easier stuff- retraining him out of some bad habits. He will be taught whatever sound/symbol correspondances he does not know and will learn about syllable types and how to identify them. Each session he will practice sounds in isolation, sounds in words, words in phrases, words in sentences and in paragraphs. He will also practice this as an encoding (spelling) exercises. A good tutor will always hold him accountable for what has been taught. It is hard to tell how fast he will go or how quickly he will be aware that he is making progress. I always have a record keeping system with my kids so that they can “see” this. Generally I see visible gains in a month or so- especially with older students who have a lot of “wanna”.
