OPINIONS: FM SYSTEM FOR CAPD CHILD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My 2nd grade daughter is at a parochial school. (Forty kids to a classroom. ) She has CAPD. It has been reccomended by her audiologist that she have a Personal FM system or have a classroom FM system installed where all children would benefit (my preference). Has anyone used either system? Please let me know your opinions and outcomes? The school can’t afford to supply this so we need to. We live in Northern California. If you have any suggestions on funding please let me know.

Thank you ahead of time for your thoughts!

Sincerley,

Denise

Willimams Sound system makes an affordable FM System, then there is phonak, phonic ear.etc… I have used one for years and my daughter has used one for 6 years. It has really helped. Did you ask the audiologist for some catalogues? You would probably have to purchase one through the audiologist or rent one through the audiologist but the audiologist who make the recommendation should be the one that you can get the FM system through.

My son who is in 3rd grade at a parochial school with 28 students in his class has an FM Soundfield system in his room.

The audiologist who dx. him with CAPD recommended it and it was agreed upon. It was placed in the classroom over the summer before this school year. He has the type that has the speakers on the wall and the teacher wears a microphone. The public school paid for this item, not us—not the private school. IF the IEP TEAM deems the need, they can use federal funds to pay for it and have it installed.

I cannot tell you exactly what kind of a difference it is making for him as he has had it since the beginnning of this year. So, I don’t know how much to attribute the change in him to that or other items. However, I DO know that it is not only benefitting him, but his classmates as well. There is NO problems with missed directions or misunderstood instructions anymore. I highly recommend it and I also recommend fighting for the public school to pay for it.
