peer acceptance

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a special educator working in a resource room in an international school. Right now we have a young middle schooler with severe learning disabilities who is in an inclusive classroom. An aide works in this classroom along with the teachers to facilitate inclusion. While this student was in elementary school, the academic and social gaps were not very noticeable. Currently however, she is having a lot of difficulties being accepted by her peers. My student has good social skills; however she is still interested in dolls, while the other girls are into boys! We have tried talking to the kids individually, tried group exercises with them too, but the problem persists. Many kids do not truly believe that she has difficulty reading. We are thinking of getting an outsider to come in and talk about LD or show the kids a video. Any suggestions about getting her peers to show more empathy would be welcome, as also suggestions for the video.
