Phonographix or Pace?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

How do I purchase these materials? What type of L.D. student benefits from this type of program? I know of a little girl in the first grade, who has visual processing strengths. She receives intensive help with Speech/lang. and O.T., and appears to be quiet low intellectually with some visual processing strengths. Severe ADD. Little phonics ability, but has been able to memorize some first grade words. Does this sound like someone who could benefit from Phonographix or Pace? Thanks

Phono-Graphix website is http://www.readamerica.net The book “Reading Reflex” costs less than $20 and provides a very explicit methodology for using PG. This would certainly be a suitable approach to try.PACE website is http://www.mentalskills.com PACE requires a trained tutor. It’s not possible to just buy the materials. My recommendation would be to have the child evaluated by an audiologist who specializes in CAPD, since many of the problems you describe suggest a central auditory processing disorder. This eval is often covered by medical insurance, but you have to be careful to locate an audiologist who specializes in CAPD (most audiologists don’t have the necessary training to do a good eval). You can find CAPD audiologists using the search function link at http://pages.cthome.net/cbristol/ I would print out a list of specialists in your geographic area for the parents. Both PG and PACE are likely to help somewhat, but results with them could be very disappointing if there are major unaddressed sensory/motor issues — which seems to be the case, from your description.I would suggest that you go to http://www.groups.yahoo.com and join the PACE-Providers email list. There are a number of experienced PACE providers there who have experience with a wide variety of children, and some of them are PG providers also. They may be able to give you some insight into the best programs for this child.Other programs you may want to check out are Balametrics at http://www.balametrics.com (relatively inexpensive, OT), NeuroNet at http://www.neuroacoustics.com (OT and auditory), and Audiblox at http://www.audiblox2000.com (inexpensive home-based cognitive training, although not as intense or comprehensive as PACE).Mary: How do I purchase these materials?
