Phonological Awareness Testing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Is anyone familiar with and/or using the CTOPP, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing? I would appreciate hearing about the pros and cons of this test. Thanks!

My daughter had the CTOPP. It’s a great test. However, you have to be sure to administer all of the relevant sub-tests.

My daughter was very slow, and so our SLP initially skipped some of the subtests. In this case, the real word subtests were administered and the nonsense word subtests were skipped. When dd went back and did the nonsense word subtests, it became clear that she was using highly developed receptive language skills to compensate for glaring decoding problems. Both sets of subtests were necessary to identify the real problem.
