I’m just curious which item(s) you purchased. I’ve looked at their products before and know they have quite a few different things. I almost bought their CD-ROM that has Rapid Naming activities on it. Is this by chance, the one you’ve used?
Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
Thanks for the recommendation! I’m doing Seeing Stars with my son, but it is not so easy. Sometimes he seems to be getting it and visualizing the patterns, but other times it’s like he he cannot get it. I remember reading a description of dyslexia as being “word blindness” and for my son I can’t think of a better way to describe it.
It’s absolutely mind boggling.
Anyhow, I was thinking that a CD might be a good way to add in practice with what we’re already working on. And possibly a fun way(?).
Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
Laura,
Does he have good phonemic awareness and good word attack skills? Those would need to be in place to a certain degree before doing Seeign Stars. Maybe you had him evaluated at LMB. Sorry, I just don’t remember. Has he been checked for visual issues?

Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
Hi Janis,
Yes, he was evaluated at the clinic and they felt he is ready for S/S. I bought the kit from Gander and I have to say, it’s very impressive. Full of quality materials and well organized. MUCH easier to use than just getting the manual and trying to create the materials on your own.
At this point we’re doing an hour a day with weekends off. I don’t think it’s enough, but it’s not easy to get my son to do this. Some days it seems like he’s moving along and making progress while other days he gets extremely frustrated.
I think my son’s main issue is rapid naming/visual memory. We did VT for quite awhile. My son may still have some mild visual problems, but I think sustained visualization is a real difficulty for him. That’s why I think S/S might be most helpful.
By the way, I “tested” my daughter’s orthographic recognition (she’s in Jr. High “Honors English” and constantly reads LOTS of books) with the seeing stars materials. She found it slightly difficult to read some of the cards (mainly because she’s not used to having to think about the patterns in words). I thought that was kind of interesting. Learning to read this way requires more training and thought — even if, sadly, it’s the only way some kids can learn to read.
Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
Oh, are you the same Laura that sold a Seeing Stars kit a few months ago? That’s great that you had the LMB eval. I feel their evals are very good…more extensive than some others I’ve seen.

Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
Hi Janis,
No, I just bought Seeing Stars earlier this month!!!! I don’t know if I’d ever sell it. It’s a great kit.
Re: Question for Marycas about Sound Reading
That’s funny, I really do think the other person’s name was Laura, too! But I am so glad you like the kit. I am taking the training in November and I can’t wait!

I bought the entire Teens and Beyond Program for my 11 yr old. That means workbook, CD, and readers.
I think the Teen CD listed one or two exercises the elementary CD didnt and thats why I chose to go teen over elementary. No regrets! I think most kids would be able to handle the teen version from about 9 on(IMO)
