Hi,
This last weekend I went to the Southwest IDA convention and Dr. Wolf spoke, the same lady as the one who is doing RAVE-O. From the sounds of it this is quite an involved program and much more complex than the repeated reading, rapid reading or some of the techniques in the Barton program (which are a variation of repeated reading I’d guess) or the visualization techniques in SS.
She’s an excellent speaker btw.
My understanding is RAVE-O may be coming out as a complete program sometime in the next year or two by Pro-Ed. (?)
Also a new RAN/RAS will be coming out as well (or maybe that’s the part that is coming out vs the program).
Anyway the program involves aspects of most of the above; with work on vocabulary development, reading parts of words (ie affixes), etc.
Anyone know anything else re: RAVE-O, I’d love to see this.

Re: RAVE-O and rapid naming
No, no handouts. I did get the tapes of both sessions. Someone is supposedly going to put her Power point stuff on the Southwest IDA webpage. Though this is New Mexico and I suppose manana will rule. :-)
I’ll let folks know if it happens though.
She is a great speaker and I imagine her being quite accessible. Very open. I wish to heck I had found her to sit with the group at lunch, from the sounds of it that was very interesting.
She mentioned the speed wizards as well as many other programs that help develop fluency. The whole program sounded to me very multisensory (at least that was my interpretation), not so much the tactile but there are art projects, dramatic presentations and skits, and many creative activities. Also highly scripted that would help parents and private tutors. However, I am not sure when the program will come out as I read somewhere last night that it supposedly would come out in Spring of 2003! The RAN/RAS test is more likely to come out though.
BTW, I found a RAN type exercise in Doris Johnson’s text on learning disabilities date 1967!! This woman was way way ahead of her times (also chapter on nvld).

Re: RAVE-O and rapid naming
Thanks for the update, des. How nice to get to hear speakers like Dr. Wolfe! It will be most interesting to see her program when it comes out.

Hi Des,
I actually spoke to Dr. Wolf on the phone over a year ago. I had some specific questions about RAN and she was kind enough to talk to me.
I don’t know exactly how the entire program works but I believe a portion of it is the “Speed Wizards” computer game that’s designed using Dr. Fischer’s Speed Drills (Oxten Press). Other than that I believe there’s daily reading with decodable text. I don’t recall any multi-sensory exercises. Although I’m sure it’s much more complex than what I’ve described here!
I know that some of her research and methods are described in a few IDA publications. I do have copies of these filed away and if you like I can try to find them and give you issue #’s dates (I think they all accessable online). Did she have any handouts at the conference?
