Re: deaf students and writing

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am studying to become a teacher. Right now I am working with a deaf student at a local elementary school. My deaf student has some trouble writing sentences/paragraphs because ASL is different from English. Do you have any suggestions for assisting this student with writing? Thanks so much.

Hi!

I am currently at Gallaudet pursuing my masters in Deaf Education (found your posting in doing a search for LD info and deaf students). I have worked with deaf students and the development of reading and writing skills is one of the most challenging parts of deaf education. I would like to share some information and resources with you, but I don’t want to give you information you probably already have. Are you studying to become a teacher of the deaf? Have you have any other experiences with deaf students? Let me know if you think anything I could share would help you!

I am also a teacher of hearing impaired children. The most commonly used program for teaching writing (and I mean basic writing…of sentences) is called Apple Tree Language. Here is the web-site:

Click on Apple Tree Language from that page.
