Dear Deborah, I don’t know where people have received the misunderstanding that PG is better for younger or older students. It is for anyone that doesn’t know how to read, no matter how old they are. I trained an elementary school this past summer and now none of the students are reading below grade level! I teach 7th grade and most of my students are graduates of Wilson’s reading program. They all were at the third or fourth grade reading level. They all have a deficiency in phoneme awareness. Wilson is a highly structured phonics program that takes at least 2 to 3 years to teach a child how to read. It really doesn’t touch a child’s needs that has a phonemic awareness problem. Every child that I have remediated with PG and had Wilsons for at least 3 years, thought that each letter represents a sound in all words. Why would you want to teach a middle school student using Wilsons and find out in three years that it didn’t work? Do we really think that they have more time to waste? I would recommend that you teach any student using PG, no matter what the age.
