Read Naturally program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m looking for feedback about the Read Naturally program. My son doesn’t seem to have problems with fluency or speed, but his comprehension is poor. Will this program address comprehension, or is this a case of fitting the child to the available program? The extra reading help is good, but the extra time out of the classroom is not, so I would just like to be sure that the time out of the class is worth it.

He’s in 4th grade, and is reading at grade level, but is a very reluctant reader.

Read Naturally addresses comprehension, however it is not a comprehension program. It is a fluency program.

I work at a school that uses the Read Naturally program. I see great value in it. The program is used mainly for fluency, however, comprehension is also addressed. What we do if a student is reading fluently on grade level is have them write a 3-4 sentence summary of what they’ve just read. This is a more complex skill and helps with comprehension. The stories the program offers are also great. They make historical stories really intersting for the kids to read.
