My son really got into Boxcar children. They are 3rd grade level. Little House on the praire is another great on. My son got into those because of what happens to all of the guys. His LRC teacher even suggested Harry Potter.
My son started those and at first had to go slow with it. Now he loves the series and has read all of them.
Best of luck, Hope that helps,
Julie

The best thing you can do is take him to the library and or bookstore and let him choose. He may prefer nonfiction and that is good. He will be motivated to read if it is a subject that interests him.

And read to him.
My husband read the entire Harry Potter series
to our son so he could join in the whole Potter mania
conversations.

(And The Lord of the Rings series, and the Redwall series
and many others….)

We have addressed the problem of teaching a dyslexic to read. Please examine www.jwor.com for details.

Most of you seem to be confused by the fact that she’s speaking about a student not her son. She won’t be taking a student to the bookstore. She won’t be reading to a student over the summer. One thing I suggest to my students for summer reading is “Archie” comics. Many of them have never read a comic book and don’t realize that “FUN” reading is still READING. I whole heartedly support the recommendation for “The Magic Tree House” series. It’s how I taught Social Studies to my LD class.

Sounds like my son a year ago; what about Louis Sachar’s books…The Wayside School series, Holes or Help, There’s a boy in the girl’s bathroom; Gary Paulsen is a good author for boys, too.

This year my class of boys were very reluctant readers. They really turned on to reading when they read Captain Underpants by Dave Pilkey. The books are funny and fun. My entire class were fighting over books, hiding them in their math books and asking to take them home.
