Does anyone have a reading comprehension program that has worked well for 3rd - 5th grade students? I am an SLD teacher, and am finding that some kids don’t need the decoding, but desperately need comprehension strategies.
Thanks
Nice Program
You could also look into Houghton-Mifflin “Soar to Success”. It is for Readers Gr 3 and up. It is leveled by grades so the interest level matches readers’ age. there is information available on the Houghton-Mifflin website. I don’t have the address handy, but a google search for “Soar to Success.
It is a nice program because all the materials are laid out for you. Beside some good comprehension strategies (questioning, prediction, retelling, summarizing, etc.), there are also some decent phonics lessons that you can include or exclude, as you prefer.
I like both books mentioned above, and use them. However, sometimes it’s nice to just have it all laid out in lesson plans.

You might check out Lindamood-Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing, too.

Re: Reading comprehension
The Lindamood-Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing for Comprehension is a great program for students of all ages struggling with comprehension. I use it with my second and third graders…it is appropriate for all grade levels.
Re: Reading comprehension
Do I need to be trained in V/V? or is something I can learn by myself.
Thanks for advice,

Re: Reading comprehension
Lisa, it’s an easy program to learn by yourself. Simply read the book. Besides there being a good overview of what’s involved, there are also very good sample lessons. There are also examples of mistakes children make and how to “error handle” them; often that’s the hardest part so it’s great to have that included in the manual. You should have no trouble learning V/V; it’s the easiest of the LMB programs to learn and among the easiest of any of the remedial programs available.
Read the books Strategies That work - Stephanie Harvey and Mosaic of Thought by Ellin Keene. These will show you how to teach comprehension strategies to all children. I have been doing reading like this all year. It is amazing the talk about books that goes on in my classroom. The comprehension ability is going through the roof.
