Can anyone tell me if you have heard of his program and if so, what you think of it? I have a son who is Mild Cognitive, and it seems that this program seems to be one of the best in the City where I live. We have done the assessment and Dr. Truch seems to think he can help.
Thanks for any replies.
Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
Ohh, thanks for that information. I have been doing a lot of research, and Lindamood Bell always comes up. I had never heard of Lindamood Bell until a couple of months ago. So, I research LB and it just seems to be “the place”. So, of course they have no centres here in Canada, so I search out tutors who use LiPS, VV, and the Reading Foundation kept coming up. I read a lot about his clinic and his studies on Lips and Phono-Graphix.
We took my son there, Dr. Truch spent an hour with him and did some testing, after speaking with us for an hour, we were very impressed at how informative he was, and his confidence in my son.
My son does not have LD, but is Mild Cognitive. So, I really hope that things will work out there. This seems to be a good place, and they seem to know what they are doing.
Thanks for your reply. I know most people here are in the States, but there were a few threads by searching, that The Reading Foundation was mentioned. Was hoping others had some good stuff to say about him.
Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
I hope your son has much success! I do believe you are trying the very best thing for your son by going to the Reading Foundation. If anyone can help him read, they probablycan.

Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
I met Steve at the IDA conf last fall. I loved the program. It looks very thorough. He knows his stuff. No doubt I would have my kid in his program if I lived there if I had a kid who needed it. His program covers all the needed components of reading from everything I know. I spent time looking at it and was amazed at the depth of this program.
If anyone can remediate a kid, it is Steve from my point of view.
I am into Phono-graphix but see many wholes as a entire program. Steve takes a PGish approach but adds the fluency, voc. and practice needed. I have not used it personally, but… I feel confident that it would work based on his knowledge and actual research.

Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
Michelle,
Do you think he or his teachers / programs are good for Cognitive Children?
Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
I have no way of knowing but I’d try it.
Something else to think about…., there is a lady on the BRI listserv who is using the BRI books with her son is a tramatic brain injury. I think she said those BRI books are making a big difference. They are very cheap and easy to use. They have all the code embedded and it moves along quickly with code but takes longer than PG but kids seem to get more fluent.
Do a search on the yahoo group called Beginning Reading Instruction. Many teachers and tutors are dumping Phono-graphix for this “program” which consists of reading these books. It’s too early to tell if the program is one that I highly recommend but….for the dirt cheap price, I’d give it a try. No tutor fees needed if your child will just read with you.

Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
I would not use *solo* a program that consists of just reading the books and waiting for the embedded phonics to be picked up. It is a well-demonstrated fact that embedded phonics *doesn’t* generally get picked up even by kids with no LD’s, and you get left with a lot of difficult unteaching and remediation. However using a planned sequential set of books *with* some simple direct phonics instruction, a good workbook, maybe 20-30 minutes reading and 15 minutes direct phonics, is a proven winner.
Re: The Reading Foundation - Dr. Truch
I agree, I would not just use the BRI readers alone but…it might be something to try right now along with another intervention. I don’t think it would hurt and it could be beneficial. You need to have kids practice reading anyway….so you could kill two birds with one stone…good code building practice building fluency at the same time. It might be worth a shot that you could do on your own.

Steve Truch is an excellent resource, and if I were closer, I’d take his training and probably send my own child there! He has background in Lindamood-Bell and Phono-Graphix and has gone on to incorporate the best therapies into his own program. He has published research in International Dyslexia Association journals. I’d jump at the opportunity to have a child tutored there if he feels that he could help your child’s particular issues!
