reading help

I need the name of the reading technique that uses colored overlays to aid student’s reading. If anyone has information on the technique or knows where to find info, please reply.

First, this system is highly questionable. There is absolutely no real scientific research backing this up, and there is a lot of advertising that smells of snake oil. There are a lot of anecdotal stories out there, but remember if we went by anecdotes we would still treat toothaches with horse bones. On the other hand, anecdotes may *occasionally* be right, like moldy bread for wounds. I will tell you where to find out about this, but advise you to take reports of miracle cures with a very large grain of salt.

I am quite ready to believe that people have varying degrees of light sensitivity — both I and my daughter certainly do — and that shading or controlling light and contrast may make things easier.

However I have real questions about the subjective reports of “letters sliding off the page” (many of these seem the result of suggestion) and I simply do not believe that someone will instantly cease to be dyslexic when exactly the right shade of violet plastic is placed over the book.

The system is called the *Irlen system* and the problem they claim to treat (not recognized by the medical community) is called *scotopic sensitivity*.

An Internet search will probably yield you results on those two terms. Another place to look is in the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) bulletin board; there are discussions every few months on this topic — just look through the older posts.
