Reading Program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a 2nd grader who has an IEP and has been identified as having a LD in basic reading, comprehension, and writing. His LD teacher is using the Harcourt Intervention series- I’ll be honest- I haven’t seen much improvement in reading skillls and was wondering what anyone’s opinion is with this reading series. He began 2nd grade reading around beg to mid 1st grade, and is still at around the same level.
Thanks

You need research-based tutoring intervention. I do not know the particular series being used, but if it isn’t working, there are simple and inexpensive methods that usually get good results. Unfortunately many people find that their school either can not or will not do effective interventions, so you may have better luck getting a tutor privately. Please contact me if you want practical suggestions and/or my how-to-tutor outlines. [email protected]

I think a basal reading program’s intervention kit should be used by the regular classroom teacher for the strugglers. I do not feel it is the best choice for kids already labeled LD. If you look under LD In Depth and then reading, there are articles that tell the kind of programs that are appropriate for children with LD’s in reading.
