Reading Test

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Please recommend a reading test that I can give my 10.5 year old son that is relatively inexpensive and tests the various components of reading.

I want to see where he is in order to make a plan for the summer.

Thanks, Caran

Caran,

I would suggest contacting the International Dyslexia Association in your state to see if they have a referral list for people who do reading assessments in your area.

His language arts teacher is going to give him the Silvaroli Reading Inventory & let me know the results. Thanks.

There’s a $20 online test that might be helpful. I haven’t used it myself, so can’t evaluate it, but have seen it mentioned by others and the demo looks reasonable. Website is http://www.letsgolearn.com/

Other websites with free online tests you can try yourself are http://www.edu-cyberpg.com/Literacy/quickassessment.html and http://members.tripod.com/~gleigh/readtst.htm . These do not look as comprehensive as the one above.

One more website with links to reading tests is http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/articles/060899.htm

None of the above would be the equivalent of professional testing, but they could provide you with some worthwhile information.
