ReadingPen and Kurzweil 3000

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My son is a 10th grade student with dyslexia and CAPD. School has recommended the Kurzweil 3000 and the Reading Pen. They are able to utilize the program at school. They will program it onto his home computer or laptop.
I’d like to know from those with experience your opinion of the two devices. I would also like to know if my scanner was not compatable for Kurzweil if they are required to provide a laptop for his use at home or scanner for the home computer.

any thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

We love the Kurzweil 3000. It has been a great help to my dd. She is provided a laptop through the school. I believe that if you don’t have the equipment, then it is the school’s responsibility to provide it. Will he be scanning things at school? If they can create a workstation for scanning and printing, that would be really helpful. I would also find out if they are providing training for him, along with e-textbooks.

WIth all this stuff, what’s even more important than the device is how well they know how to make it *work* for the things the student has to do.

It sounds like these guys might just know waht they are doing :-) The devices are good… for the right tasks and the right student, with the right training.
