Reversals

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I need some strategies to help kids with reversals of letters and numbers. Specifically, with letters: “m”/”w”; and
“b”/”d”.

My son has trouble with letters and reversals of letters. Someone on this board years ago gave out a real good strategy for “b” and “d”. Form your left hand into the letter “b” and your right hand into the letter “d” and move them together so that the two circles touch. This forms the shape of a little bed with end posts. After the child makes the bed have them sound out b.e.d. and read their hands. My son is 13 and still I see him use this before writing a “b” or a “d” and it has been the only thing that has helped him.

Teach correct formation of letters, lstf to right and top to bottom. Kinesthetically these letters are very different. I’ve gone into this in more detail several times recently on Teaching Reading and Parenting (Dysgraphia) — look at my posts over there for very effective methods. They take time and work but have many positive results.
