I liked the Saxon math program my son had in middle school. However, the High School has been a disaster. They immediately put my LD son in a two year basic skills math program that does not address any issues with his disabilities (major visual/spatial and fine motor skills problems) and is about 3 years lower in level to what he was doing at Middle School. The High School has no preAlgebra program. I find this unbelievable! I am looking for an internet study program of something like Saxon 87 or another recommendation.
However, many homeschooling parents have found their children did great with Saxon until they got to Algebra, at which point they stumbled badly. If your son likes Saxon, the dive videos may be the best way to go. However, if you and he were not satisfied with it (it does tend to stress computation at the expense of concept development), there are other video math programs available that are very good.
One that has gotten very high marks from parents who turned to it for remedial work is Systematic Math at http://www.systemath.com/. This is probably the one I would look at most closely. Other choices are ChalkDust at http://www.chalkdust.com/, http://www.videotext.com and http://www.boxermath.com (interactive online rather than video).
Quite a few parents whose children do fine with Saxon find that they stumble badly at Algebra. When this happens, Jacobs Elementary Algebra (item #’s 010028,010026,010027 from http://www.rainbowresource.com) is often recommended before starting Saxon algebra. Apparently Jacobs offers an excellent introduction to algebra with much better explanations than Saxon algebra.
